Death on the Tundra

It's one thing to read about how the larger red foxes are pushing out the smaller arctic foxes in a competition for territory in the Arctic. It's another to see it happen before your eyes. We spotted this red fox chasing this white arctic fox, zigging and zagging. The arctic fox might have escaped, too, if he didn't cross a small pond, which unfortunately wasn't frozen. The little white fox slipped through the broken ice, drenching himself; the red fox was on him in an instant. The struggle was short but the screams were terrible. This photo is the last moment; the Arctic fox, soaking wet and bleeding, fights to the end.
